Q&A Monday with Emily Fisher - Fishee Designs & Mermaid Gossip

Bristol-and-UK-Fashion-Blog-Mermaid-Gossip-Colour-Popping-Ponies-Outfit-Post-What-I-Wore-12-720Today, I want to introduce you to pink haired entrepreneur, Emily Fisher of Fishee Designs. Emily and I met through common friends, first via social media and then finally meeting up in Bristol a year or two ago. They say that you shouldn’t keep all your eggs in one basket, and Emily is proof that running multiple, successful businesses is absolutely possible.  Since 2009 Emily has taken on a vintage shop, opened her own photographic studio, created graphic design & websites with 'Fishee Designs' for clients across the world, sold digital products, set up the ‘Weird and Wonderful Wedding World’ (a wedding fair for alternative weddings), gained a passionate following for her fashion and lifestyle blog ‘Mermaid Gossip’ and founded a travelling photo-booth – I honestly don’t know where she finds the energy! Recently Emily has seen a lot of success with her photo booth, (described as the 'Worlds Coolest') taking bookings for weddings, events and parties of all sizes.  It came to the point where Emily was having to turn away customers on days that were already booked, so she built a second booth (always answering customer demand in true, sparkly entrepreneur style).  This additional booth has created the need for Emily to take on her first member of staff for the coming wedding season.  It’s an exciting time of new growth for this dynamic, colour loving business woman. Emily is currently running a FundSurfer campaign to build her business even more.  FundSurfer is a website which hosts crowdfunding campaigns for businesses.  In return for financial backing (as little as £10) the business gives out rewards.  It's a fun way to grow and to get seen by more people and potential customers.  In fact I am considering a similar website for the launch of my first collection of handbags. emily-fisher-mermaid-gossip-tattoos4 I think we could learn a thing or two from Emily, so I have her here to answer a few of our questions.  Lets dive straight in, mermaid style... Hi Emily, it's lovely to have you here.  You've had so much experience in recent years, when you first decided to start your own business, how did you know it was the right time? I always wanted to be self employed (I have always hated answering to someone else!) it wasn’t until the photo booth idea came to me that I had found an idea that I could see providing me with a full time business. I had tried ideas before then and I am a firm believer in just going for it.  What’s the worst that can happen!? That's a great philosophy to have, a lot of people really worry about how things will go and whether they will make any money.  How long were you in business for yourself before you moved into profit? Just over a year. Bristol-Fashion-Blog-Mermaid-Gossip-Tuesday-Treasures-Floral-Vixen2 What’s your number one tip on defining your perfect customer? Being true to yourself and your business and your perfect customer will find you organically. Who or what is you inspiration right now? I am inspired by all the independent women in the world that are doing it for themselves. Gala Darling, Emily Faulstich, Sophia Amoruso, if they can do it, so can I! They are great role-models.  What do you think holds some women back in business? The only thing that can hold you back is yourself. I'm in agreement there, Emily, I love that.  What is your most important business tool that you just couldn’t give up? The internet. 3498730_Winter_Pastels9 What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in business and how have you learnt from it? Comparing myself to others, feeling bad about myself and I am still learning how not to do that.  I feel comfortable in my own skin these days, I know my style and I am confident in my businesses style. Your style and personality really shine through all of your products, I adore the colour and confidence you portray.  What would you say to your 18 year old self if you could get a message to her now? Put your anger into something creative.  Go with your gut and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! With lots of arms to your business, have you ever been tempted to give up? What advice do you give to others who might feel that way? Yes on many occasions. “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”. That saying keeps me going! The-Blogcademy-Mixer-by-Fishee-Designs-Photo-Booth-1000-px-at-72dpi-07 What would happen on your perfect day? The perfect day can change from one day to the next, my perfect day with my family would be a dog walk along the beach with my partner Brad and my two dogs (with a beer in the pub after!) I find time out of work is when I am most inspired.  Apart from the odd instagram, I steer clear of my phone on Sundays. I’m not religious but it’s the one day we all get together. Or it could be a really positive and productive day in the office. Both are just as perfect in different ways! I recently shared a post '10 things I'm afraid to tell you'.  I was astounded by the support afterwards.  You blog open and honestly too and I admire that.  What is one thing that you are afraid to tell us about yourself? I’m not always as happy as I come across, I suffer with mild depression and it’s hard to be so positive online all the time. You must have a fantastic support group, how important is that and who are those people to you? VERY important, I have a few true friends that I can go to at my lowest and they will always pick me back up, or just let me have a moan! What is the most important thing in the world to you? Being Happy. emily-fisher-mermaid-gossip-tattoos3

Awesome answer, I love it.  I think so many people really miss the importance of happiness, they strive for certain things and realise that once they get there, those things don't make them happy after all.

On a much more material note, what would be your dream handbag?

A Kate Spade - in bright Pink. Thank you Emily - it's been wonderful to have you here.  Best of luck with your FundSurfer campaign - you really deserve to take this to the next level.  I look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday when we will take a peek into your handbag!  If you want to keep up with Emily, you can read her blog and find her on the Socials below.  Also, do check out her Fundsurfer campaign - she's got fabulous rewards on offer, just take a peek at the video here Youtube Fishee Designs PhotoBooth campaign
